Activities

Hiking

In the surroundings of Lagar de Serrato which is situated on the edge of the Parque Natural in Los Montes de Málaga, there are plenty of opportunities to walk in the olive and almond orchards or in the pristine nature for a few hours. Furthermore, there is an extensive network of small unpaved roads connecting the different hamlets. The region is sparsely built-on, hilly and has mostly olive- and almond trees and some vineyards as well as forests, bushes and herbs. The tracks are easy to walk on and the tours vary from one to eight hours.

It’s a hilly and sometimes mountainous area of about 5.000 ha, with small valleys and – during winter time – fast running rivers. In the southern part of the park you’ll find spectacular views to the coast, Málaga and when the weather is bright even to the Atlas Mountains in Morocco.

Further away you’ll find Las Alpujarras, the Sierra Nevada, Sierra de Tejeda, Sierra de Loja en El Torcal de Antequera. Each of these places has its own typical appearance and character, like untamed mountains and impressive rock formations (pancake rocks) and beautiful forests, lakes and rivers. During winter time we can recommend hiking in the snow of Las Alpujarras and the Sierra Nevada (also see Location and Surrounding Area).

Directions and maps available at Serrato (also see Packages).

Biking

In the close surroundings of Lagar de Serrato there is a network of unpaved paths connecting the different hamlets. Ideal for the adventurous mountain biker as well as for the biker seeking the medium rated tours. The region is sparsely built-on, hilly and has mostly olive- and almond trees and some vineyards as well as forests, bushes and herbs. The tracks are alternately sloping and steep, the routes varying from two to eight hours.

The road system in the vast area mainly consists of secondary roads, generally in good condition. The highest peak in the Montes de Malaga is almost 3000 feet so for the trained biker a challenge. Now you can understand why sportsmen even from the Madrid region regularly use this region to practise their skills!
Further away you’ll find Las Alpujarras, the Sierra Nevada, Sierra de Tejeda, Sierra de Loja en El Torcal de Antequera. Each of these places has its own typical appearance and character, like untamed mountains and impressive rock formations (pancake rocks) and beautiful forests, lakes and rivers (also see Location and Surrounding Area).

Beach and Sea
The beaches east of Malaga you’ll find at approximately 20 km from Serrato. Little coastal villages offer you a large variety of fish restaurants in a pleasant atmosphere. No high-rise flats and foreign tourists here, just the Spanish enjoying the sea and the beach. The dynamic international places are for example Torremolines (45 minutes) and Marbella (90 minutes); here are the longest and most beautiful beaches of Spain.

Motorcycling
One could think the roads in Andalusia have been constructed by motor-lovers: perfect asphalt in a never ending sloping and mountainous landscape. Of course there are some places where you can leave the beaten tracks and where you can enjoy the network of unpaved paths connecting the different hamlets. These roads are very well suitable for all-road motors and will offer you the necessary challenge and adventure (also see Location and Surrounding Area).

If you wish we can arrange the rental of a motorcycle for you with a licensed company.

Spanish courses
The Axalingua Holiday courses in Colmenar have been designed to enjoy your vacation learning Spanish. With 2 hours per day, they are perfect for combining multiple cultural and sporting activities and with a stay at Lagar de Serrato. Besides private lessons it’s also possible to learn the language with a group of friends or relatives.

Horse riding
Close to Serrato you have the possibility to hire horses at a reasonable price. You can make beautiful (day) trips in the gorgeous surroundings with its olive and almond orchards, in the pristine nature and in the Montes de Málaga. Furthermore, there is an extensive network of small unpaved roads connecting the different hamlets adventure (also see Location and Surrounding Area). (zie ook Locatie en Omgeving)

Don´t worry if you’re a beginner, there a quite some possibilities for beginners as well as for advanced riders, with – if you wish – English guidance.

Skiing and ski cross-country
At a 90 minutes car drive you’ll find – somewhat south of Granada – the ski area of Solynieve which makes it possible, with Serrato as your base, to go skiing for a few days and enjoy the snow. The well maintained slopes are mainly of the categories blue and red, but there also are some challenging black slopes. Because the mountains are between 2.000 and 3.500 meters high there is snow from December until the end of April despite the fact that this is the most southern ski area of Europe.

Because the subtropical Costa del Sol and the Sierra Nevada are so close you could enjoy some nice skiing in the morning and drive down the coast to have a sunbath at the beach n the afternoon. Of course there are lots of après-ski possibilities in the Sierra Nevada as well.

City trips
Finca Serrato lies very centrically for visiting some interesting cities worth seeing like Sevilla, Ronda, Granada, Antequera, Córdoba, Nerja and Málaga. As soon as you reached the paved road again it’s only 17 km to the motorway A-45 which connects you to these interesting cities. For a cultural experience for example you could visit the Alhambra in Granada, see Picasso’s birthplace in Málaga or enjoy the original flamenco in Sevilla.

Suggestions for day trips, directions, GPS and road maps are all available at Serrato. We will be very pleased to inform you about the possibilities, just ask...
